2 May 2022 | From the friendly caves of Pixie Hollow.
Today I want to share with you a poem sent to me by one of the daily email's readers.
It was inspired by last Monday's email. (If you haven't read it,
go here.)
Without further ado:
Of course I charge professional fees
Money does not grow on trees
If I don't charge, it's called giving
Very hard that way to earn a living
-- Nick B.
I loved this so much. Thanks, Nick!
Scales of professional fees are critical to understand when you're seeking those in unregulated industries like mine.
Many regulated (or governed) industries have professional fee structures by which their members are expected to abide.
In mine? It's a little bit like Russian Roulette. But only as a result of people who work in content-related fields doing so because:
- people tell them they can write good
- they like writing
- they think it's a better job than working for That Other Fella
- they think it's easy
... and not understanding that professional bodies even exist.
Here's a tip I'll happily give to you:
Australia's content folk are governed by professional fees established by two bodies that work in collaboration. They are:
- The Australian Society of Authors
- The Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance.
Their fees are identical.
I'm a full, financial member of the Australian Society of Authors and was in the MEAA for almost a decade. (I left because of their tangled and weird relationship with Google. Want that story? Reply and tell me, I'll share it.)
My point is that professional fees are available on the websites of key professional associations.
Look at them when you create your budget.
Understand why they exist that way.
And then go ask for quotes.
