From the friendly caves of Pixie Hollow.
I'm on the hunt for the ultimate peach-coloured lipstick.
Yes, it's relevant to you. You'll see why, below.
First, a bit of a story.
Since my son came along I've fallen in love with lipstick. Must be something about being the only girl in the house (that's my excuse, I'm sticking to it).
The trouble is that I am a natural redhead, so choosing lipstick colours is a difficult thing.
I decided to hunt down the ultimate peach-coloured lipstick. I want something kinda pink, kinda orange, not red. Most of my lippies are red.
But as I started thinking about this, I wondered if what I really wanted was peach.
Peach ranges from quite pink to quite orange. So if I wanted more of an orange, was I really after apricot instead?
Hooley dooley, this is a big question. I wondered if I was comparing incompatible fruits. They're not apples and oranges, and they're at least both stone fruits, but they are wildly difference experiences of taste, aren't they?
Then someone, somewhere, in Cosmetics Land, decided that coral was a colour and added it to this confusing trifecta.
So what I'm doing is going back to the basics. What is the essence of the colour that I'm after? And if I don't find it by hunting for peach, what are the other criteria that might make decision-making easy?
Then, how do other people - specifically stores, retailers, manufacturers - define this elusive shade of lipstick?
You see, we are getting deep now into the nuances of content design:
- definitions
- categorisation
- connection to other assets (illustration)
- use case
- UX of search
- UX of consumption
And we are also getting deep into the nuances of decision-making:
- what's my intention?
- what are my criteria?
- how will I know when I've found it?
- who might be able to help me discover this "perfect" lipstick?
Therefore, today I want you to take 30 minutes with a cup o' cha, and go back to basics for me.
Thinking about your content and communications:
- What are you trying to achieve?
- Why are you trying to achieve it?
- What are your criteria?
- How will you know when you've found it?
- Who might be able to help you discover the correct pathway, and why them?
Basics are the driving force of every high performance output.
It's why a dancer learns plies as the first thing they learn, and why they continue doing them every single day for the rest of their lives.
The basics are not just the basis.
They are the foundation from which everything else comes. This is as true in content and communication as it is in ballet, music, artistry of all kinds.
And because you're on my list I'm going to assume that you're aiming for a higher goal than simply marketing. Because if you were only after marketing, you'd go subscribe to Gary Vee or Seth Godin instead.
Aim higher than marketability. Aim to be memorable and loved as well.
