From the friendly caves of Pixie Hollow.
I bet you've never heard of Robert.
Robert is a haunted doll, like Annabelle.
Unlike Annabelle, Robert's films haven't had the explosive visibility that the Conjuring universe has had. There are actually four films featuring this doll.
He was owned by a US-based artist named Robert Eugene Otto. It wears a sailor suit that Otto himself wore as a young boy. He was gifted to the young Otto by his grandfather, who purchased the doll from a German company in 1902.
Unlike Annabelle, which is apparently possessed by a demon, and which causes all kinds of nasty mischief, Robert is more magical.
He giggles.
His face changes.
He's animated.
And apparently he causes misfortune if you fail to respect him.
To be honest, I like the sound of Robert. Who doesn't want to cause mischief to someone who disrespects you?
The notion of respect is something that we find in call centre lines all the time. It comes by way of warnings. Like, if you're rude, we won't serve you.
You'll have seen similar warnings on stores since mask mandates became The In Thing, too. Especially in rural areas!
But is this really a respect issue? Or is it just rules-setting? What's the difference?
Well, respect is consideration, a looking at (a person/issue/thing) and considering treatment or outcome. Rules setting is establishing a principle that governs conduct.
In other words, you can't command respect.
You can command rules.
But whether you have a right to issue a command over a customer is another matter entirely.
Respectful communications begin and end with how you design them. I've found in my career that if you are respectful, then respect is what comes back to you. So perhaps those signs and notices merely indicate a lazy team at work. It's easier to hide substandard communication behind a rule, sign, or notice that pushes it back onto someone else.

How have you designed all of your organisation's communications to be respectful?
