Could you deprive yourself of reading and (all) media for a week?
It's hard, man. I've done it for a week.
Well, ok, slightly less than a week. But almost a week! It's part of an artist recovery program that I'm doing (I'm coming to the end of the fourth week. There are 12.)
Depriving yourself of reading and media means:
- No emails
- No letters
- No newspapers
- No magazines
- No books
- No ebooks
- No social media
- No websites
- No Googling-stuff-because-you-just-thought-of-a-thing-you-want-to-know
- No YouTube
- No Pinterest
- No text messages.
Nothing.
If the very idea of this fills you with horror, then you have to do it.
I didn't think I could do it.
I go to bed at 6.30 pm with my little boy, every single day. I stay there until he wakes up in the morning. If there is no consuming when you go to bed that early, what do you do?
You sleep.
You think.
You create.
In my case, reading deprivation showed me three things:
- I could be getting way more sleep if I just existed in the moment. And way more sleep feels amazing!
- 99% of my reading is via email. And I don't even read 99% of that enormous volume. I scan it and leave it unread and it adds stress just by being there.
- Creating valuable work occurs in volumes directly correlated with the level of reduced consumption.
If you're an artist of any kind, then I exhort you to understand something:
Mastery is in the volume. If you're not creating, you're not developing. You've got to do the work.
There are creators and there are consumers.
Which one are you?

PS. A result of the week is that I decided that I only need 10 email subscriptions. Literally everything else is gone. How many do you have?
Please let me know what I can do for you.
