Content in 2021 would kill your grandad
Published: Wed, 12/08/21
Imagine that you had a grandfather in his 90s who, out of curiosity, started reading some industry's content in 2021.
Or, perhaps, that he picked up a mainstream newspaper one day.
He would sit there reading calmly, until he chokes up, grabs his chest and keels over from a heart attack.
You, in your panic, throw the newspaper across the room and get him to the hospital.
There, the doctors proclaim that it was 'just his time'.
But you know better.
You know that the appalling content killed him.
Content in 2021 really is appalling, generally speaking. Just last week I read an article in an industry body's journal (which I won't name) that was the worst thing from them that I have ever read. And I've been reading it for at least 13 years.
It was clear that the writer’s skills were substandard.
It was clear that the editor wasn’t a hands-on editor, or didn’t have capacity to be hands-on.
And it made me realise that most “editors” now are titles instead of roles, and don’t function as arbiters of quality.
After flagging the issue with the Ed (which I always do, because I figure it's a good staff development point), I came to realise that this is one of the ongoing impacts of governments' insistence on business closures over the past couple of years.
The elimination of staff in a bid to save money is going to have a dramatic, rolling impact on what publications are capable of producing.
And I don't need to tell you, {{subscriber.first_name | capitalize() or "Pixieling"}}, that without the appropriate resources to support production, awful writing is going to become more common.
Without editors, your writers become accountable for your entire publication's quality standards.
Is that fair?
Hardly.
Is it sensible?
No. Most writers don't even know what the standards are.
Can you maintain a particular voice, a level of quality, a unified front from many contributors if you don't have an editor in the team?
No. No, you can't.
If you're the person doing that quality control right now, I can give you something that will get you back to your core business:
Me, in the guise of editorial support.
I'm only going to be offering this to you for a little while longer, so get on the blower sooner rather than later, to discover what it can do for you:
