Don't be afraid to get dirty

Published: Tue, 01/18/22

From the friendly caves of Pixie Hollow.

'You've got to stop being afraid to get dirty.'

The deep voice resonated down the phone.

The feeling in the pit of my gut was of recognition. A deep knowing that this was Truth. That I've been too conservative, too tightly boxed.

The voice continued.

'You have to get dirty. You have to dig deep through all the layers that you avoid if you're going to create anything that will shift consciousness in others.'

This came from a 70-year-old woman who agreed to be my writing therapist. In discussing this engagement, she told me right upfront that she's a 'f--n bitch', that she will 'make you cry'. And then she gave me a list of four books to source and read, plus homework.

Along the way, she pressed some buttons that I didn't think I had.

One was labelled Identity.

One was labelled Career.

One was labelled Avoidance.

In other words, darling Pixieling, when it comes to my own writing - the creative stuff, you understand, the things that make me proud to be a writer - I'm not at all dirty. I am dressed in pristine white, tied up with a white rope, and hung from a hook on the wall as decoration.

What I was being asked to do is find a way off the wall.

To find a way out of the ropes and out of this safe little haven.

To get into the garden and start digging with my hands. To feel the squelch and grit of the dirt, to smear grass on my knees, to pummel myself through the depths, reeling from scratched cheeks and narrowly avoiding having my eyes poked out by branches as I do so.

To emerge, victorious, somewhere else. Mud-caked. Wet. Tousled. And shining with a new light.

Corporate work tends to tie you up and hang you on a wall.

It's easy to be safe.

It's simple to avoid the dark and nasty depths.

But if you were able to plumb those depths, to bring something new to the world, what could it do for your customer relationships?

Improving business performance can be a very clinical, clean, stainless-steel-like proceeding. But relationships are messy. Creativity is messy.

So when was the last time you allowed yourself to get dirty?

The truth is that market leaders are market leaders because they're willing to wade through the muck where others are not.
