Christchurch got rid of its magic

Published: Tue, 11/02/21

From the friendly caves of Pixie Hollow.

This week, the Kiwi city of Christchurch fired its Wizard.

The Wizard has been a fixture of the town since the 1970s. He's got a TripAdvisor rating of 4/5 stars; he's been on CNN, and since 1998 he's been on the City's payroll.

His job?

To bring joy and fun to the city.

The Christchurch tourism bureaucracy decided they needed to be "more diverse", that he no longer fits their promotional profile, so they pulled his funding.

As the Wizard aptly commented, they've got no imagination.

To this little Pixie, way over here in Pixie Hollow in central Australia, it sounds to me like the Christchurch council is a bit too woke for its own good.

They've got to promote 'diverse communities', instead of supporting something that's clearly already working. Also, it's more than a little bit discriminatory against the wizarding folk. Wizards are as diverse as they get! The word 'diverse' means essentially different.

If wizards aren't different from normal folk then I'll eat the jingly bells that adorn my footwear.

I'm telling you this because it's so tempting to take something that's become part of the fabric of what you do and get rid of it.

It happens all over the place. And it happens because when something is 'normal', it appears 'tiresome'. Even if the audience for that thing is delighted every single day.

If you live in Christchurch you probably think that the Wizard is a passe old w@nker. But if you're visiting from Poland, you might be completely transported by its presence.

Remember, pixieling, you are not your content's audience.

Neither are your colleagues.

Neither is your family.

So when you're doing something content-wise, the last thing on earth you should do is ask them for their opinions.

Test it on the audience instead and then make a decision.

This is something that Christchurch ought to have done before deciding to become like every other boring, woke city on Earth.
